28 Aug Town traffic issues being addressed
The Guernsey Retail Group is pleased to be working with Traffic and Highways to address concerns raised by some town retailers.
It was recently brought to our attention that there may have been an increase in people cycling through the pedestrianised areas of St Peter Port, along with vehicles making deliveries outside of permitted hours. Wider road safety concerns have also been shared with the GRG around the stacking of pallets in clear ways, parking overnight in restricted areas such as unloading bays, and the zebra crossing on Fountain Street.
The GRG has been reassured that Guernsey Police are dealing with recently reported issues around individuals cycling and driving through pedestrianised parts of town. Retailers are asked to work with Traffic and Highways and Guernsey Police by continuing to report any incidents directly to Guernsey Police so that a clear picture can be maintained of where any issues are occurring.
Where deliveries need to be made within the town centre, the GRG knows that the vast majority of retailers work within the times allowed. If you need to arrange deliveries at other times, please do apply for a permit through Traffic and Highways.
If there are persistent issues around vehicles driving through the pedestrianised areas without permits or stopping in clearways, please do also report this to Traffic and Highways and Guernsey Police so this can be dealt with. Retailers are also asked to report any other traffic related incidents that happen in our shopping centres.
By ensuring our town centre is safe for pedestrians, while enabling everyone to move around and deliveries to be made promptly, we can all help to keep our main shopping centre a vibrant, welcoming place for our customers to visit.
