17 Jun Substantial support from candidates
The GRG has welcomed strong and wide-ranging support from general election candidates in response to its recently published manifesto.
We called for bold, innovative thinking to secure a strong and healthy retail sector for the Island. In total, 45 candidates have responded, showing broad recognition of the vital role that shops play in supporting vibrant town and community centres. Many highlighted the importance of encouraging both Islanders and government bodies to prioritise buying locally.
There was also a clear desire to urgently revitalise St Peter Port, with suggestions including rezoning areas for a mix of residential and retail use.
Malcolm Woodhams, Guernsey Retail Group director, said: “We have been very encouraged by the level of support for the retail sector, with many candidates recognising in particular its contribution to the Guernsey exchequer along with employment, either directly or through ancillary or support services.
“Many have taken the time to email their opinions and observations on the importance of maintaining an attractive, healthy and appealing Town Centre, along with the Bridge area and other shopping hubs. There is also acknowledgement that this is hugely important for residents and visitors alike.”
“This election presents the perfect opportunity for Deputies to help secure a vibrant and thriving future for Guernsey’s retail sector and help stimulate the local circular economy.“
